Today's scripture is the very famous passage of the temptation of Jesus. It is really comforting to know that our Lord and Saviour went through everything that we go through. Jesus was tempted by Satan, and he never flinched!
Satan starts tempting Jesus by tempting him with the stuff - "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread"
How often does Satan try and do the same with us? "Go on buy that item; you need that new handbag, it doesn't matter if you can't afford it..." Satan wants us to put things before God. He wants us to want things and shop till we drop - he wants us to covert stuff and be consumed by the need to have what others have.
Next he tempts him with power - "I will give you all their authority and splendour, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours"
We all want to be successful. We all want to do our best in all things, but when it becomes our obsession then it is put before God and that is not of God. Jesus should be the centre of our lives. If we put career before God then we are worshipping other gods, we in effect are breaking the second of God's laws. We need to put God first and not our bank balance.
The third time Satan tries to tempt Jesus he wants to test him, to test God - "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here"
How often does he question who we are in God - "Are you really a Christian? Are you really accepted by God?" The biggest temptation that Satan could tempt us with is challenging who we are in God. We have to stand firm and know that we are Saved, delivered, bought at a price, children of the living God. We need to remember what Jesus did so that we could be all of those things and more. We need to remember that our Salvation cost God everything, it cost him his Son.
